Pilot Workshop

Students will work in groups following collaborative creative practices, selecting a cause to support as facilitators of change. In groups, they will envision, create and pilot a participatory workshop that uses design methods to support bottom-up innovation within a specific field.

THE WHY

The problem of sustainability and responsible consumption has become such an important topic in today's world. As designers andconsumers alike, we need to rethink our consumption and production habits through the lens of sustainability.

It is estimated that in Aotearoa, NewZealand, we generate 17.49 million tonnes of waste per year, of which an estimated 12.59 million tonnes are sent to landfill (Ministry for the Environment, 2021).

As designers, we can help mitigate waste by designing products with purpose and sustainability in mind. However, it is impossible to force change upon people's processes. Therefore, we have set up a workshop to encourage it by showing  designers how easy it can be to change our designs and habits to create solutions that address the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

Our workshop aimed to provide designers and consumers with a fresh perspective on
production to enhance their consumption practices. We aimed to instil this new
perspective in tangible and intangible fields, including digital design.

Central to our workshop was ensuring that participants were left with a deep
understanding of their designs' societal and global impact. We wanted them to develop a critical mindset towards designing and consuming, keeping the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12 at the forefront of their work.

In order to effectively communicate our ideas and methodology, the workshop needed
to be engaging and enjoyable. A fun and interactive approach creates a conducive
environment for meaningful dialogue, allowing participants to discuss, analyze, and
collectively improve upon the ideas and methodology presented.
