Style Cycles: The Waste We Leave Behind

Project type

Coding, Illustrations

Date

April 2024

For this project I have expanded on my chosen statistic of "Approximately 50% of the waste going into Auckland landfills each year consist of construction and demolition waste" and decided to focus in on two of the biggest contributing factors of Construction and Demolition waste: Frequent design changes during the construction process, and the rise of renovations. I have combined these factors into "The culture of updating house styles to fit with popular trends''.
From this statement I created a GIF through illustrations and coding to shows the constant cycle of home styles being renovated and updated (in a loop) by showing the construction and demolition of three house styles (basic, villa, modern contemporary) where the wooden frame stays the same (or similar) throughout the renovations.
While each renovation takes place in the GIF more waste is created and put into the truck, showing that with each change in style comes a lot of waste that ultimately ends up in our landfills.

I have chosen the Basic, Villa and Contemporary styles to show the trends of houses in New Zealand over the past 100 years, where the basic style was more popular back in the late 1800s, early 1900s as they were cheap and easy to build, the Villa style began gaining popularity in the mid 1900s (and is still popular with many Auckland home remaining in this style) and then the more modern contemporary style coming into fashion within the last 10-20 years as minimalism has grown in popularity.
Going through these three styles within the GIF really shows the culture of continual change regardless of how much waste is produced.
